Presentation
I believe that contemporary music is meaningful for wider audiences than is usually thought. As a matter of fact, it has a greater immediate effect in comparison with traditional music, in which experience depends on prior knowledge of conventions and styles. Paradoxically, one might almost say that contemporary music requires less ‘cultural capital’ to be appreciated, but that requires us to explain how perception is mobilized and critically transformed by the works in question. As I hope to suggest with the four composers on this recording, these challenges appear in through the experience of (productive) a disorientation of a specific musical element: rhythm, stylistic expectations, dynamics and form, respectively.
