Presentation

Rooted in the symphonic art of the 19th century and clearly not terribly eager to adopt contemporary musical trends, Henri Mulet saw things on no less of a grand scale at the time, even composing for orchestra. He himself conducted at the Société Nationale – and remarkably so, according to the instrumentalists – the first performances of his works, all prior to the Great War. A few pieces of sacred music and songs with piano also appear in his catalogue, as well as for voice and orchestra. But his works for organ are the best-known part of his output. By the richness and scope of the cycle, the complexity of writing and instrumental demands, the Esquisses Byzantines – 10 Pieces for great organ naturally remain his masterpiece.
Michel Roubinet
