Presentation

In this anthology of today’s piano music, Korean pianist Yejin Gil proposes a progression that ranges,in inverse order, from Olivier Messiaen, the tutelary figure of new music, to the extreme contemporary of an Unsuk Chin, by way of the arborescent energy of Pierre Boulez and the Franciscan simplicity of György Ligeti. One can also perceive a dialogue in this programme, or even a confrontation, between two musical forms: the fugue and canon – the former illustrating European sophistry in its way of making sounds hold together, and the latter illustrating the first archetype of ‘making music’ beyond the different cultures inhabiting the earth.
