Presentation

At the time he composed Ruth, between 1843 and 1845, Franck was only 21 but he already had three piano trios to his credit, along with an opera (Stradella) and a few pianos pieces in the style of the period. With this work, he tackled a genre to which he would return, but much later, with Rédemption, Rebecca and Les Béatitudes. Inspired by the Bible’s Book of Ruth, the plot focuses on four main characters: Ruth, her sister Orpha, mother-in-law Noémi and Booz, whom she will wed. The three parts, on unequal length, correspond in a way to the three acts of an opera.
