Here, in La Boîte à Joujoux, one doubtless better understands why all these gifts, combined in the two "little hands" of Yvonne
Lefébure, work wonders in recreating the composer's imaginative universe. At her side, Pierre Bertin is a marvellous accomplice.
No editing here – just a simple start-to-finish (but with such a result!). It was in 1957. And it was exactly a month earlier that
Bach's Concerto in D minor, conducted by Fernand Oubradous, was recorded live in the framework of the famous Salle Gaveau
Sunday concerts. It, too, is in mono but that is of little matter: the music is here, and the audience was not mistaken about that!
As for the Prelude and fugue in C# major, it was broadcast in February 1971 (also live) in the course of the radio programme
‘Que savons-nous de la musique ?' (What do we know about music?').
The principal form of the Italian solo concerto was the ritornello movement which proceeds in successive brief musical events, alternating tutti ritornelli and soli, which contrast one another thematically and texturally. Its increasing popularity went hand in
hand with the heyday of the violin as a virtuoso instrument and the activity of the greatest violin builders – Amati, Guarneri et Stradivari.
Marceline Desbordes-Valmore was cherished as an equal by Balzac, Alexandre Dumas, Victor Hugo and Sainte-Beuve, and celebrated
after her death by Arthur Rimbaud, Paul Verlaine and, in the 20th century, Louis Aragon. Marceline Desbordes-Valmore’s originality
is the particular expression of a sentiment of melodious simplicity and supreme elegance. That so many composers from the past, like
Camille Saint-Saëns and Reynaldo Hahn or, from our century, including those of ‘pop’ songs, should be so keen to set her romances and
other poetical works tends to prove that the recognition of her poetic genius defies the passing of time.

THE MOST ACCLAIMED RECORDING OF THE COMPLETE MUSIC FOR HARPSICHORD!
'The indispensable reference: capable in turn of depicting raging tempests or tackling the movements in lute style with emotion and discretion, the harpsichordist moves and surprises us with every note. [...]
A complete recording that must absolutely be owned and which has dethroned Scott Ross in our heart.
What more is there to say?' Muse Baroque
'We applaud unrestrainedly this magnificent and highly moving complete recording, which has nothing
to be ashamed of in relation to what Scott Ross accomplished twenty-five years ago. Noëlle Spieth has
managed to make herself 'delicate in keyboards', in keeping with Couperin’s poetic recommendation.
The composer could not have hoped for a finer homage.' Sylvain Gasser (Répertoire)
In the 19th century, along with Henryk Wieniawski, Henri Vieuxtemps, Joseph Joachim and Eugène Ysaye, Pablo de Sarasate carried on the succession of Niccolo Paganini. A century after his death, the Spanish virtuoso's magnificent heritage can be judged by the standard of a few works, which, since then, are played by the world's greatest violonists.
Yet, there exists a considerable gap between these hits and the rest of his largely ignored and fairly sizeable output.
Sarasate's catalogue contains several categories of pieces and, on the present CD, we have limited ourselves to works inspired by the Romantic opera of the 19th century.
With the works recorded here, we are fully in the Slavic and Germanic choral tradition of the second half of the 19th century – otherwise said, in the heart of Romanticism. Besides the unique beauty which characterizes these songs, we find an almost perfect synthesis between text and music – in the style of a lied. The majority of the CD is devoted to Dvorak's « Moravian Songs », largely influenced by popular melody. This is followed by Rachmaninoff's "Six Chorals", where we can clearly hear his signature in the piano accompaniment. Closing the disc is a collection of lyrical small choral works signed by Rheinberger, composed from a series of poems praising nature.
The 21 children who form the Maîtrise des Bouches du Rhône are to be commended for (in addition to their musical execution of a particularly difficult program) their pronunciation of Russian, Czech and German, as they sing in the original languages.
With the 'Ensemble intercontemporain' conducted by Susanna Mälkki, Diego Tosi gave an impressive performance of György Ligeti's violin concerto, thursday 19th, November. In this occasion, he receives warm congratulations from Pierre Boulez himself.
The concert will be broadcasted next Monday 28th, December on France Musique channel at 8pm.
